Dog Agility Training ‘Tips’ – Obstacle Discrimination

25

www.pamsdogacademy.com http This video is about teaching a dog how to tell which obstacle to take. Sometimes in trials they set up an obstacle discrimination to challenge the dog/handler team. Many dogs fail the challenge, but only because they were not taught the body language of the handler or taught the "get out" which I have also done a video on. Make sure your dog knows the hand signals or body language for the "get out" and "here" to ensure that your dog takes the proper obstacle. Good luck! If you have any questions, please contact me. It is difficult putting everything a person needs to teach in a short video.

Start with one obstacle. It is really the hand signal and body language that you want the dog to learn. Arm extended out means take the obstacle further away and bringing the other arm close to your body and putting the extended arm down means take the obstacle closer to you. start with one obstacle and teach the get out cue first. I have another video on teaching the get out. Then go back and work on the obstacle discrimination. Start with obstacles further apart. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much Sian! You are so sweet and so supportive of my videos. Your dogs will pick up agility so fast that you will need to have these skills and know the movement first, because the border collies are naturals and pick up on our body language so fast! Have a great Thanksgiving!

Thanks Ashley! I was at a trial that had an A-Frame & Tunnel discrimination and just about every dog took the tunnel and should have taken the A-frame, so it made me think that this would be an important skill for people to learn! Have a great Thanksgiving, too!

Thanks! I wish that i could take total credit for it, but I was working on this with my trainer and thought that it might help someone else. Courses get confusing in open and excellent! Too bad we cant stay in novice forever. HEHE!

wow, that is such a forward thinking approach, especially considering how confusing those courses can be. Or maybe that’s just me.
